A list of a few of my favourite films that cleverly explore the inner workings of the mind and deeper layers of human consciousness through captivating, discrete, awakening, and beautifully heart-opening stories.

The Revolver ~ Guy Richie
At the beginning, it appears to be a quirky, gripping and mind-bending action story that follows "Gambler and conman, Jake Green, who enters into a game with potentially deadly consequences" - IMDB. But as he gets deeper into the game, he begins to realise that the "greatest con to ever exist" is his own mind.
There is so much wisdom and truth interwoven into almost every line.
Quote from film ~ "There is something about yourself that you don't know. Something that you will deny even exists until it's too late to do anything about it. It's the only reason you get up in the morning, the only reason you suffer the shitty boss, the blood, the sweat and the tears. This is because you want people to know how good, attractive, generous, funny, wild and clever you really are. "Fear or revere me, but please think I'm special." We share an addiction. We're approval junkies. We're all in it for the slap on the back and the gold watch. The "hip, hip, hoo-fucking-rah." Look at the clever boy with the badge, polishing his trophy. Shine on, you crazy diamond. Cos we're just monkeys wrapped in suits, begging for the approval of others." - Jake Green

The Matrix ~ The Wachowski's
Another movie that on the surface, looks like an action film about "Computer hacker Neo, who follows a beautiful and mysterious woman into a forbidding underworld, and discovers the shocking truth-- the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence." - IMDB
But watch a layer deeper.
"Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?" - Morpheus.
Twin Peaks - Tv Series ~ David Lynch
So many things in one show.
On it's surface, its a Labyrinth Mystery about "An idiosyncratic FBI agent, Dale Cooper, who investigates the murder of a young woman in the even more idiosyncratic town of Twin Peaks." - IMDB
At its heart, the show follows a cast of the most loveable characters as they navigate their own personal & romantic lives, alongside the strange-and-getting-stranger, inter-dimensional mysteries of their town.
The OA ~ Brit Marling & Zal Batmanglij
"Having gone missing seven years ago, the previously blind Prairie returns home, now in her twenties with her sight restored. While many believe she is a miracle, others worry that she could be dangerous." - IMDB
Another Mind-bending Mystery that explores Inter-dimensional existence, and the idea that the reality we call our own, is only one version within multiple realities co-existing at once.
Lucy ~ Luc Besson
A fascinating & action-driven exploration into the true capacity of our minds as a woman taps into layer after layer of her own consciousness, until she experiences the vast and unimaginable unity consciousness at the centre of all life on earth.
The Truman Show ~ Andrew Niccol & Peter Wier
"An insurance salesman discovers his whole life is actually a reality TV show." - IMDB
The film follows his quest to discover what exists outside of it.
The Holy Mountain ~ Alexandro Jodorowsky
Surrealism. Absurdism. Be prepared for confronting imagery...
"In a corrupt, greed-fueled world, a powerful alchemist leads a messianic character and seven materialistic figures to the Holy Mountain, where they hope to achieve enlightenment." - IMDB
Dark ~ Baran bo Odar, Jantje Friese.
A German Netflix Series.
Mind-bender. Labyrinth. Mystery. Time-Travel.
Past, Present & Future co-exist simultaneously in a time loop that interconnects four families in a small German town.
This series was full of unexpected twists and thought-provoking concepts that kept me alert, engaged, and contemplating the nature of existence the entire time.
Deep, complex and incredibly smart story-building.
Sense 8 ~ Another one by The Wachowski's
A light-hearted Netflix series that explores a kind of mycelium or internet that exists between the mind's of certain types of humans called Sense8's.
8 diverse strangers from different locations across the globe are reborn into a cluster that are interconnected by mind, heart, and sense.
Each character is on their own journey of transformation, redemption, and empowerment, and through the relationships that form between the cluster, discover connection, love, and freedom greater than they could have found alone.
I'm adding these two films, without claiming they are 'the best'.
But if you have seen and are drawn to the essence of the films listed above, you might also like these two short films I co-created with my brother Frank Bennett that fall under the same genres;
The Mitoté ~ Frank & Sita Bennett
A mind-bending Labyrinth based on Ancient Toltec Wisdom about the six main characters in our minds that govern our lives.
'Reality' starts to appear less real as Max wakes up to the illusory nature of existence through a series of seeings into the subconscious mind.
"I was on the edge of my seat the whole time trying to keep up with the depth of the story & it's twists and turns. It felt like my first out breath was at the end credits. This is as much an understanding of how we work as humans as much as it is an amazing film. Bravo! - IMDB Review
The Dance of Samsara ~ Frank & Sita Bennett
~ COMING SOON 2021 ~
The wheel of Samsara spins.
Through multiple lives we travel, forgetting what came before, unaware of this repetitive cycle to which we are bound.
What if there was a dance that opened a doorway to the infinite possibility that lay beyond?
Surrealism. Absurdism. Eastern Mysticism.
