*That I've read.
Books that explore Higher Consciousness, Personal Transformation, Enlightenment, Toltec Wisdom, & the Nature of Existence.
I'll begin by saying that my repertoire isn't massive. I've never deep-dived down the rabbit hole of reading a lot of spiritual books, wary of soaking up too many spiritual ideas and it becoming a heady quest for knowledge rather than an experiential exploration of truth and self.
BUT, these books have all had profound influences over my perception of reality and understandings of the states of consciousness and experiences of existence that are available to humankind when we are willing to transcend our primal and social programming and patterning.
1. Power Vs Force
I was inspired to write this post because I'm currently re-listening to the audiobook, spoken by Hawkins himself, and the clarity and accuracy of the way he examines consciousness through kinesiology is so fascinating and almost unarguable because it's been so thoroughly tested.
Through his 'Map of Consciousness', Hawkins shares a powerful, mind-opening way of interpreting and understanding the stages and levels of consciousness available to humans, and explores how to transcend out of destructive patterns into higher, more positive, and life-supporting states of being.
2. Autobiography of a Yogi
I was past halfway through the book before actually accepting the fact it isn't fictional... Yogananda shares such profound, mind-blowing, impossible experiences of Eastern Mysticism that are so far from what is acknowledged in Western culture that it sparked a new level of determination within me to open up to new possibilities of existing, which lead to my commitment to dedicated yogic & meditation practices to assist this.
3. Rumi poetry
The Guest House
' This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes As an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond. '
~ Selected Poems of Rumi
4. The Alchemist
A simple adventure of a man on a quest to find his personal legend, and 'all the forces in the universe conspiring to help him'.
5. Journey to Ixtlan - Carlos Casteneda
An intellectual but ignorant student seeking plant knowledge meets a simple Toltec master who teaches him deep wisdoms of what it can be to truly be alive.
6. The Four Agreements
Interestingly, all of the books listed above and most other popular 'spiritual' books I've come across including Way of the Peaceful Warrior, The Celestine Prophecy, The Power of Now, ect ect ect ECT, are ALL written by men and follow male protagonists!!
While in essence, the discovery of truth is the same at the core of all beings, man or woman, I think Brida spoke to me so much because it is the only book of this type that I found following a female's journey of self-discovery, which captured a different essence than the male stories. Magical, gentle, intuitive.
A huge driving force behind my passion for writing fantasy adventure mysticism novels that explore deeper mysteries and ancient truths of the world, is to create stories for women on this path, about women. For it's something that I feel I've lacked over my journey.
So, with that said, I'm also going to shamelessly plug my debut novel ~
8. Maya of the Inbetween :)
A young woman's quest for truth and freedom from the tightly controlled iron city she was raised in.
A devastating exploration of climate change and human ignorance.
A transformative journey of self-discovery.
An epic adventure into true love, connection, freedom, and unity consciousness.
