Acupuncture and Maca

How this combination helped to regulate hormonal imbalances and absent period cycles. Twice. (Plus receipes)

Both acupuncture and macca root are ancient and have been used by older, wiser cultures for thousands of years.

Acupuncture isn't based on science and even now the sceptic part of my brain still can't wrap my head around how pricking needles into my skin could possibly shift internal imbalances, But the evidence has become so obvious I can't ignore the fact that when my mensturation cycle stopped for two years, the only real changes I made before it came flooding back were introducing weekly acupuncture, and maca root powder.

A few years later my oestrogen levels dropped and periods stopped again. After another year of only getting the odd one here and there, I tried acupuncture again. Within two weeks it came back and is still regular!

Basically, for anyone who does'nt know much about acupuncture, the needles stimulate the body’s energy pathways (meridians) to clear blockages and encourage the normal flow of energy (Qi) through the body. There're many articles out there that explain the mechanics of it in depth so if your intruiged, have a look. I just wanted to share my experience for anyone that's curious but sceptical.

Every body is going to react differently depending on your issue and lifestyle. I eat an extremely clean, unprossesed diet, drink rainwater and am not exposed to an exess of toxins. So for a body that's already quite clean, something subtle like acupunture and herbs can stir profound shifts and might just be that missing link to swing your body back into balance.

Obviously for more extreme illnesses, there's probably more going on than a simple imbalance and should be treated to its severity.

For hormonal imbalances in particular, I know of a number of women who were getting irregular, painful and like myself; completely absent periods due to under or over-developement of either testosterone or oestrogen and after introducing a tablespoon of maca powder a day into their diet (in combination with one or two other natural treaments) their periods returned/smoothed out.

Maca is a plant native to Peru, and can be found ground into powder form. It's been traditionally used to enhance fertility, libido, energy and stamina.

It's is reeeaaally good in combo with cacao and makes an awsome energy boosting smoothie or raw chocolate.

Maca smoothie receipe;

2 tbspn cacao

1 tbspn macca

1/4 Avocado

1 frozen banana

1 fresh date

handful of spinach or almonds (optional)

nut milk or coconut water

Raw Maca fudge chocolate;

6 meldool dates pitted

1 cup of cacao powder

1/4 cup macca powder

1/2 cup tahini - *Tahini is also one of the highest eostogen producing foods for those who have deficiency, not to mention calcium, iron and protein for vegans. Is espessially good for menopausal women to regulate hormones. (My favourite snack is dried figs, dates, celery or carrot dipped in tahini!)

1 cup coconut oil

You can add extra sweetener or flavours. I love adding uncrystalised dried ginger cubes through it.

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Poor into a lined baking tray and put into the freezer for an hour or so to set. Then cut into squares and leave in the fridge.
